Coming to Mounted ARI in Spring 2023 is a very exciting multi-discipline creative arts initiative featuring visual arts, creative writing and music.

Luft will draw together visual artists, writers and musicians to create work in direct response to an original music composition.

World renowned Music Producer and Engineer, Peter Cobbin, has composed a piece of music for this creative arts project and participating creatives will use this musical composition as a stimulus to make work.

More general Luft related information below and creative discipline specific links are at the bottom of the page:

Peter Cobbin

Mounted ARI is privileged and delighted to be collaborating with Peter Cobbin for LUFT. Peter is one of the world’s leading Audio Engineers. Based in London, Peter works with his colleague Kirsty Whalley at their company Such Sweet Thunder. The company is at the cutting edge of music recording and mixing. Together, they work across of diversity of musical genres, but in recent times have focused upon recording and mixing the music for feature films.

Peter is a Grammy award winning creative who has recorded and mixed the scores for some of the most iconic films of the past two decades including The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Star Wars, Shrek, The King’s Speech, to name but a few.

Previously, Peter was the Chief Engineer at the iconic Abbey Road Studios. For more than two decades Peter worked closely with the who’s who of the music industry including artists such as U2, Amy Winehouse, Freddie Mercury, Bjork, Kanye West, The Eurythmics, Ed Sheeran, Sting, Annie Lennox, Luciano Pavarotti, Kate Bush, Gotye, Janet Jackson, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger.

Although he has not had the opportunity very often to write and perform his own music, Peter is a gifted musician. The piece he has composed for LUFT is a piano based arrangement, the first movement in what will eventually become a tone poem. The composition is based upon an experience Peter shared with his wife Alison, and it is, for Peter, a meditative reflection upon the lasting, yet ephemeral nature of memory.

Anchor 1

Luft is a German word, meaning air. It is sometimes used in the context of music. A luft gives a sense of shape to connecting musical phrases.

“As a Recording Producer, I might request that this device, a small comma, a brief pause, be inserted or placed strategically to help define the shape of an incoming phrase; the aim being to give clarity to a melody or motif. If the luft, that small gap of air, is performed with masterly precision, then this instruction helps to create phrasing contours while preserving musical continuity.” (Peter Cobbin, 2022)

Luft can also mean:

  1. breath

  2. atmosphere, sky

  3. a draft

  4. lift off, rise into the air

  5. … and more …
